We believe that every child and adult has the right to a home, an income, healthcare, education, safety, dignity, and connection with their community of choice. Micah Projects provides a range of support and advocacy services to individuals and families.

Job Description

Be part of an exciting new program that is reshaping how families are supported through stable housing, safety and pathways to stronger futures for children.

The Supportive Housing for Families program at Edmondstone Street provides stable, affordable and safe housing for families with young children who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness and involvement with the child protection system. The program delivers a site-based supportive housing model, offering 18 units of housing with integrated, on-site support. This program combines property and tenancy management with multidisciplinary support services, delivered in partnership with a community housing provider. Support is provided through a trauma-informed, person-centred approach, with a focus on sustaining tenancies, strengthening family functioning and improving outcomes for children.

We are looking for a dynamic and experienced Family Support and Advocacy Worker to work as part of the Supportive Housing Families team to provide a coordinated and consistent approach to sustaining tenancies and supporting family stability within a site-based supportive housing environment and Edmondstone Street. This is achieved through providing practical, flexible and responsive support to families, strengthening their capacity to maintain housing, improve wellbeing, and build connections to community and services.

This is meaningful work that plays a direct role in supporting families to stay safely housed, rebuild stability and create stronger futures for children.

There are two full time employment opportunities one at Level 4 and one at Level 5 of the SCHADS Award.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide on-site support to families living at Edmondstone Street to sustain their tenancies, strengthen family functioning, and improve wellbeing.
  • Work from a family-centred and trauma-informed approach to engage families, identify goals, and provide flexible, responsive support tailored to individual needs.
  • Support families to address challenges impacting housing stability, including financial stress, health and mental health needs, alcohol and other drug use, domestic and family violence, and social isolation.
  • Undertake structured and unstructured engagement with families, including home visits, informal check-ins, and planned case management support.

Essential Criteria

  • Relevant Human Services diploma or tertiary qualification and experience, or a combination of experience, expertise, and competence.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and build respectful, trauma-informed relationships with families, including those experiencing housing instability and complex needs.
  • Demonstrated experience working with families in crisis and supporting them to achieve their goals through practical, flexible and responsive approaches.
  • Demonstrated understanding of child wellbeing, safety and development, including the ability to assess and respond to risk using a strengths-based approach and work effectively with child protection services.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience working within a supportive housing model, including Housing First or similar approaches.
  • Experience working within a site-based or intensive support environment.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed and family-focused practice in housing and homelessness services.
