Job Description
Brisbane Domestic Violence Service (BDVS) is a specialist domestic violence service for the Brisbane metropolitan region. The primary role of BDVS is to provide free and confidential services to women and children, partners in an intimate relationship and family members who are affected by domestic or family violence.
BDVS provides a range of services by a multidisciplinary team, in different locations across Brisbane. These include outreach and mobile services that meet people in locations which are safe and suitable to their circumstances, whether that be at home or in the community. BDVS leads the facilitation of collaboration between agencies and systems, which assist in the protection and safety of women, children and any person experiencing domestic and family violence.
BDVS recognises that in order to meet this objective, there needs to be a proactive and integrated approach to supporting all agencies to fulfil their role and responsibility and to ensure the safety in intimate relationships, homes and in our community.

We are looking for a dynamic and experienced Specialist DFV Financial Advocate to provide financial and budgeting information, support and advocacy to women who experience financial hardship and stress arising from domestic violence. This will include information and advocacy on an extensive range of issues related to the inability to pay household bills, loans, credit cards, mortgages, rent, fines, taxation, separation, property settlement and child support for example.
The role may at times include systemic advocacy on areas of financial and regulatory reform.
The Financial Counsellor embedded within Brisbane Domestic Violence Service provides:
One on one advocacy for victim-survivors impacted by economic abuse and financial hardship related to DFV.
Assistance with debt alleviation providing financial counselling, budget coordination and economic empowerment.
Referrals to legal Support pathways to help victim-survivors understand their rights.
Systemic advocacy to influence policies and systems that impact financial abuse and hardship.
This is a full time employment opportunity until December 2026 with conditions and salary at Level 6 of the SCHADS Award.
Desired Skills and Experience
Key Responsibilities:
Provision of financial and budgeting support to women experiencing hardship and financial stress arising from domestic violence.
Arrange and negotiate payments plans with creditors and institutions on behalf of participants
Advocacy to financial and other agencies to ease the financial stress and hardship for women.
Essential Criteria:
Current accredited membership of Financial Counsellors Associate of Queensland.
Knowledge of a variety of household financial management and budgeting methods and the ability to relate most appropriate methods to a specific situation.
Experience and knowledge of laws and regulations in the finance, credit and debt management sectors, and current policies regarding non-payment of fines, infringements and alternatives to payment.
Knowledge of alternative dispute resolution agencies to which complaints can be pursued.
